God has Moved Into the Neighborhood PDF Print E-mail

As we come to Christmas 2011, the words of John 1:14 (from the Message) are ringing in my mind and heart. “God has become flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood.”  Do you celebrate that God is a real living being and living next to you, if not within you? If so I hope you will worship this Christmas season at one of the many worship offerings we have for you!  If you are not sure about where God lives or who Jesus was, or what Jesus’ birth means for you then I hope you will worship with us and that as a part of worship God will move your heart to assurance and a deeper understanding.  The message of Christmas should be clear, that God loves you (and me) so much He wants to live in your neighborhood, and in your heart and in your mind. I hope that we can worship God so fully that you can celebrate His presence in every breath, in every action and in every day of your lives.  Come and worship this Christmas and make a pattern to worship regularly in 2012.

See you in Church,
Pastor Dan

Remarkable Opportunity PDF Print E-mail

Dear Beloved in the Lord,
This fall we have a remarkable opportunity to shape the course of our future through our Capital Campaign to reduce and eventually eliminate our debt.

Most of us have a personal debt and mortgage. We grew up in and through an era that taught us that a healthy debt was a good thing. But the realities of this century are debt is burden and presents us with long term challenges that are difficult to overcome. Most of us realize that we cannot leave to our children, and theirs, the debts that have been created by the current realities. Our country has a worrisome debt, our state and local governments have liabilities that will limit and determine our future. And our church has a large debt which is counterproductive to our ministry. Most of us cannot control nor do anything about the debts of our governments or our society, BUT WE CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE DEBT OF OUR CHURCH. Through this capital campaign we have the possibility to eliminate our debt in the next three years.

We will often hear the phrase, “Debt free in three” and it will mean for us that we can face the future with infinite more possibilities and strengths for ministry. We can go from current realities to actually fulfilling what previously we could have only dreamed of. Without debt we can turn dreams into new realities.

I hope you will take the time to prayerfully consider your part in this remarkable opportunity, and make a pledge or one time gift to the capital campaign. Isn’t it great to know debts that cannot be forgiven by our great God can be overcome by our great efforts?

The Journey of Faith - New Fall Worship Series PDF Print E-mail

John Wesley (1703-1791) was not only the founder of a new movement among the followers of Jesus; he was an outstanding theological thinker.

From his sermons and writings he expanded, for many people, the understanding of God and His love for us as His creation. John Wesley’s theological explorations and explanations were enhanced and made memorable by the hymns which his brother Charles wrote to underscore and uplift the basic theme and tenets of faith!  As we journey through this fall season, I would like to explore with you what Wesley called:

“The Order of Salvation”

It was how Wesley saw our faith being developed and strengthens as we mature in our Christian journey; so I am going to give it a slightly more modern title and call this sermon series

“The Journey of Faith”

Wesley began by defining the “Grace “ of God that Paul refers to throughout the New Testament, specifically in Ephesians Chapter 2 verse 8. “For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith.” In Wesleyan theology we recognize three forms of God’s grace; prevenient, justifying, and sanctifying.  In fact our current hymnal has a section of hymns for each of these three defined understandings of grace. The sections are identified in the upper left corner of the page. As you have time, read and meditate upon the hymns for each section as I illustrate them here.

Lent: The Blessings of the Cross PDF Print E-mail

This Lenten season, I will be asking you to consider the Blessings of the Cross.  I hope you will be able to reflect upon the meaning of Christ’s sacrificial death upon the cross for our sake, if you think of it as a Blessing and a way that you are blessed by God’s love for you.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 9th this year. On that day I invite you to join us for a light supper of soup and bread in Hayden Hall at 6:00pm. Supper will be followed at 7:00pm by worship and reflection as we begin the Lenten journey with Holy Communion. We will again share what has become known as “sand” communion, as we recall things in our lives that we might like to change, in the days ahead.

This Lenten season, I am going to invite you to carry a nail to remind you of how much God loves you. Nails will be distributed at the Ash Wednesday service and the Sundays during Lent. As you carry the nail I want you to be guided by this mediation.
