About UMW

According to the Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church, "In every local church there shall be an organized unit of United Methodist Women."

Mission Areas

The total program of United Methodist Women and the Women's Division is mission. This includes individual growth, spiritual enrichment, education for mission, social issues awareness, leadership development, schools and workshops, and financial support for mission programs and projects throughout the U.S. and around the world.   True to our Wesleyan heritage, mission cannot be solely charity, but involves empowerment and advocacy for social change.  By combining the two, we can be witnesses to the love and life of Jesus Christ.

To understand the mission of our organization, members of the organization should turn to:

  • Response magazine
  • Mission Update newsletter
  • Mission Studies online
  • Maps of programs and projects around the world
These resources help put faces and experiences to the mission story.

Women and Mission

Since United Methodist Women's total program is mission, members are in mission with others in their own communities.  For more than 135 years, they have been empowered by leadership education opportunities, mission education, the Reading Program, tools for advocacy and more.  These opportunities allow women to act and advocate to empower women in the United States and abroad.

United Methodist Women also support programs and projects aimed at improving the special needs of women because of their refugee statuses, their immigration statuses, situations in which they are abused, their high illiteracy rate in some countries, their economic dependence, their educational disparities, and much more.
